at the Spanish table.

I know you've been long awaiting an entry about food for a simple reason: I am surrounded by good forms of it, and I love it.  The Andalucian region is in no shortage of amazing food.  Fresh seafood, tomatoes picked off the vine, a variety of olives pickled in spicy and bitter brine, almonds roasted and covered in sea salt, red wine that is so earthy you could taste the wooden barrel and the soil that it came from.  Aie, shall I go on?  I love that Spain is as in love with good food as I am.  I love that tapas is a cultural staple, built into the blood of the locals.  Let's commune around tiny appetizers that burst with flavor and simplicity and laugh and drink wine.  What could be better?

I was able to visit the Central Farmer's Market in Malaga the other weekend, and the rooms were filled with scuffling locals and foreigners alike, purchasing their weekly produce and wares.  Fish cured in salt and prawns cooked in mashed sweet potatoes were popular purchases.  I bought myself a slice of aged Manchego, some sugared figs, and green olives, all for the low price of 9 euros.  We found a tapas bar a short ways away from the market and tried some Puntillitas (fried baby squid with the eyeballs still attached), tortilla de patatas (potato pancake), and mini bocadillos de bocarones (anchovy crusty bread rolls).  Yum.

Now that we have settled into our new home, we are also settling into our new housely duties.  This past week, I was in charge of cooking meals, with Justin, for our home as well as guests.  Being able to plan menus and cook a really nice, good, meal for others to commune around the kitchen table is one of my favorite things to do -- almost makes me feel more alive.  Me gusta mucho.  :)  The photos below are a bit past due (they are from when I was still living at the other intern apartment), but I will post the others . . . um.  Soon.  Soon!  Maybe.

In the meantime, the food discoveries will surely continue.

Throwback to my French loyalties.  Clafoutis for a movie night -- later found out that the movie wasn't going to be in French, but had a hot French guy in it? Still works.

Enchilada night, vegetarian version made by Jenny :)

At Shanda & Tara's for the deep indie film that left us disturbed and pensive.

Museo del vino.
A G42 favorite, and my first visit!

First Spanish paella since coming.  It was marvelous.
